Located on one of the most stunning streets in this region of the country, Boston Avenue, the
Philtower is recognized as one of Tulsa’s most beautiful buildings. The Gothic Revival
structure was built in 1928 and is 323 feet tall. Built during one of Tulsa’s early oil booms by the
Oil Baron, Waite Phillips, this extravagant building is now listed on the US National Register of
Historic Places. Waite also built the Philcade directly across from the Philtower. During the
“Roaring 20s” there were a spate of kidnappings of wealthy people, it was said that Waite built
the underground tunnel that connects these two buildings in part to protect himself and his family
(Waite and his family lived in the Philcade,, and he worked in the Philtower) from gangsters.
